An Ode to self-preservation
Makeup wipes with stamps of faces
4in x 6in each
2024-ongoing
This work is a collection of multiple makeup wipes, each stamped with face makeup, representing the daily performance of removing makeup at the end of the day. Makeup is a crucial element of womanhood for trans individuals especially early in transition. It is a marker of femininity that distinguishes you from the other “men”; The difference between being addressed as a she or a he.
The act of undoing becomes a ritual of transformation, reflecting on the identities we both create and dismantle. The work speaks to the tension between the desire for transformation and the inevitable dissolution of that transformation. The collection is presented as a wall installation, spanning the surface from top to bottom. At present, the collection includes over 200 wipes and is still in progress.
