The Movement Remains

The Movement Remains works with 6 young waackers living in Ahmedabad. Waacking is an expressive street style dance form that was born in the 70s in gay disco clubs in LA. It takes inspiration from theatre, movies and comic books with strong emphasis on posing and emoting. The androgynous drama, theatrics and flamboyance of the moves acted as a form of liberation for the queer community.

In the 2000s, there was a resurgence of the dance form. Through TV and the internet, it spread to different corners of the world, attracting people who learned the dance form through images and videos. This project looks at some of those individuals in Ahmedabad, India who have developed a distinct translation of this foreign dance form.

Waacking continues to evolve and thrive, with dedicated communities around the world. It’s more than just the technical aspects; it’s also about conveying emotion, storytelling, and personal expression.
